ITIN Eligibility
ITIN Eligibility: Do You Qualify?
An ITIN is required solely for the purpose of filing a U.S. Federal Tax Return when you do not meet the eligibility requirements to obtain a social security number. It does not authorize you to work in the U.S.
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is an IRS tax processing number issued to Canadians who:
- do not possess a U.S. social security number.
- do not meet the eligibility requirements to obtain a social security number.
You need an ITIN if you are:
- required to file a U.S. tax return.
- a spouse or a dependent of a U.S. citizen.
- a student, professor, or researcher filing a U.S. tax return.
